A first-timer's guide to Ho Chi Minh City
Where to stay, what to see first and how to pace your first three days in Saigon without burning out.

Ho Chi Minh City rewards travellers who take it slowly. Most first-timers try to tick off every landmark in a single day and end up exhausted by the heat. A better plan is one anchor sight each morning, a long lunch, and something light in the late afternoon.
Start in District 1. The Notre Dame Cathedral, the Central Post Office and the Reunification Palace sit within a few minutes of each other, and a guided walking or cyclo tour links them with the stories that make them worth seeing. Save the War Remnants Museum for a cooler part of the day — it is emotionally heavy and deserves unhurried time.
Book one food experience in your first two days. Street food in Saigon is best learned with someone who knows which stall is worth the queue, and a motorbike or jeep food tour covers more ground than you ever would on foot.
Finally, leave an evening free. The city changes character after dark, and an unscheduled night wandering the alleys of District 3 or catching the river lights from a dinner cruise is often the memory people bring home.
